Research Question:How does news media use framing to shape perspective on immigrants and what are the effects of this on immigration policy?
Thesis Statement:News media uses framing to shape perspective on immigrants by misrepresenting proper proportions of the immigrant community, over-representing Latin American immigrants negatively, and perpetuating negative connotations of words and images in news coverage. Media organizations hold significant influence over the beliefs of both political parties due to their large audience and lack of cross-reference, and thus have the power to shape policy decisions.

Action Project Description:
Following the findings in my thesis paper, that discovered proportion was crucial to proper representation, I decided to follow the same ideology in my action project. For my action project, I completed three sub-projects that each covered a different aspect of my findings on framing. To cover the thematic and statistical aspect of framing, I created a spreadsheet to track the proportion of stories that the Animas Quill publishes, to find whether or not the Quill over or under-represents certain categories. To cover the personal aspect of framing, I wrote 15 poems and curated a poem book to produce more diversity in the non-binary poet category. Finally I attempted to deconstruct the effects of media framing about immigration on myself, and to educate myself on my surrounding community. I worked with Compañeros, a local immigrant advocacy organization, delivering food boxes to our community.
