Research Question:To what extent do ethical obligations, combined with the cultural and economic value of immigrants, justify the U.S. open its borders to more refugees and people seeking asylum?

Thesis Statement:Because of ethical obligations, combined with immigrants' cultural and economic value, the United States should open its borders to more refugees and people seeking asylum. The wealth, diversity, and full development of resources in the U.S. can be put towards a policy that includes a plan to address the root causes of displacement, a higher refugee cap, and a more humane and fair process.

Action Project Description:
I was drawn to the topic of immigration because in my 13 years living in Durango, I’ve observed just how segregated this community is. Personally, I didn’t have any interactions with the immigrant community here until I started working with Los Companeros, our local immigrant resource center. Through research and conversations, I gained more insight into the immigrant experience, and I want to extend that opportunity to other non-immigrant folks in our community. As someone who is not part of the immigrant community, I can’t speak for them, I believe it important for their voices to be heard. I decided to take action by sharing immigrant stories from those in our community. I was able to meet and connect with more immigrants when I began volunteering with Los Companeros. I started helping with Friday food deliveries, where every Friday we deliver boxes of food to immigrants in the community. Once I gained these connections I was able to begin the interviewing process, where I interviewed two immigrants and gave them a platform to share their stories.
